Spilsby Show Six Mile 13/07/2008
A number of Mablethorpe Runners descended on the Spilsby show to run the annual 6 mile road race which was celebrating its 10th anniversary. It was ideal conditions for the race - overcast with little wind, so many were looking to break their PBs. It was also round 2 for CLASH OF THE TITANS with the Judge smarting from his humiliating defeat to Scorpian the week before at the Louth Run for Life. The race set off at a hectic pace and its was the Judge who was first to show by leading the race out of the show ground. The race finally settled down after a mile or so with Rob determined to be the first Mablethorpe runner home, however Ross was having none of this and kept him clearly in his sights. After 3 miles Rob had a quick glance over his shoulder to see Ross still hard on his heels. He was now running scared and feared that the Scorpian would again put him to the sword at the death. They kept a strong pace going all the way back to the show ground but despite a fast finish Ross could just not close he gap and it was Rob who claimed 6th overall, and the victory over his adversary plus the running club bragging rights. Honours even or was it? There was a sting in the Scorpian's tail for Ross who had claimed 7th place, was ecstatic to discover that he had won the category for first male vet over 40. Watch out for Round 3 coming soon to a race near you!!! Other Mablethorpe runners taking part were Mick Casey, who despite being below his best due to an ongoing problem with his knees, had a good run claiming first in the Male over 60 category. Chez had another impressive run and was unlucky to finish just outside the top 3 ladies. Jackie showed she is on the way back to form to finish strongly. Jason Woodham on his debut at this event recorded a 6 mile pb, and it was great to see Keith Lamb pulling on his mablethorpe vet again in a competitive race. Finally the chairman who was given the number 13 race number on the 13th July should have heeded the omens because despite starting strongly had to pull up injured after about a mile with a hamstring pull! He also had to face the ignomy of getting a lift back to the finish in the Red Cross Ambulance!!! Well done to all those who took part - an enjoyable day was had by all (except the chairman)!!
